1. Bill Hewlett and Dave Packer tossed a coin to determine whose name would come first in the company.
The founder of Hewlett-Packard tossed a coin to decide whether the company they founded would be called Hewlett-Packard or Packard-Hewlett.
2. Flamingos are pink because of the carotenoid pigments in the food they eat.
Flamingos are large birds with long necks, sticklike legs and pink or reddish feathers. The colors of a flamingo's feathers which is pink and reddish come from the food pigments they eat like algae and invertebrates.
3. Women blink more than men
According to a study, women blink 19 times per minute, while men blink 11 times per minute. They blink more often than men due to the higher levels of the estrogen within their system. This hormone stimulates the production of lubricants in the body, including the eye.
4. Some animals can delay pregnancy for months.
Otters, kangaroos and the western spotted skunk are the examples of animals that can do this. This happens when the embryos stop developing for a given time before it attach to the uterine wall.
5. Camels are equipped with 3 eyelids
Camels have three eyelids helping them to protect from sand blowing their eyes. Two of the eyelids have eye lashes and the third works as a sort of “windshield wiper” to clean off their eyes. Because of this, they can close the lid to protect their eyes from the sand and still see using the other one.
6. A horizontal line between two numbers in a fraction has a name
Vinculum is the name of the horizontal line used to separate the numerator and denominator in a fraction. It is also the horizontal line placed over an expression to indicate that they form a unit.
7. Scientists accidentally killed the world’s oldest animal when trying to research on it
Researchers found an ordinary clam off the coast of Iceland. While trying to determine its age, they cracked to open its shell. It turned out after the accidental killing that the mollusk was about 405 years old, making it the world’s oldest known animal.
8. In 14th century, a pig was publicly executed in France
A pig was arrested for attacking a child's face in France which led to death. The pig went to prison just like humans accused of murderous acts.
9. The brain of the Ostrich has the same size as his eye ball
The ostrich has small brains but they are capable of running at tremendous speed to escape their natural predators. They also lay the biggest eggs in the world.
10. Crickets can be used as thermometer
Outdoor temperature can be determined by counting the chirps made by crickets. All you have to do is count the chirps made by crickets in 15 seconds and add 37 to determine the temperature.
